The best opening word for any word game
Everyone wants the one perfect first word. The good news: mathematically, some openers really are better than others. The better news: once you understand why, you'll stop needing a cheat sheet.
The openers that actually test the most
A great starting word does one job, it checks the most common letters in the most common positions at once. The proven heavy hitters:
CRANE · SLATE · CRATE · TRACE · SLANT · CARTE · STARE · ROAST
All of them load up on E, A, R, S, T, N, the letters that show up most in five-letter words. If you want to burn through vowels instead, ADIEU and AUDIO test four in one shot (at the cost of testing fewer consonants).
The rule that beats memorizing any of them
Here's the catch nobody admits: your opener barely matters compared to what you do on turn two. The players who win consistently aren't reciting salet from memory, they're reading the letters, not the word. They treat the puzzle as "which letters are still possible?" not "what word feels right?" Pick any solid opener above, then let the greens and yellows do the thinking.
Why this makes you better at everything
That skill, seeing letters as a set of possibilities instead of a fixed word, is the entire game in anagrams, word chains, and combos. Wordle just happens to be the gentlest place to practice it.
